How to Break 10 Common Childhood Myths eBook Chad Finkbeiner Diane Finkbeiner Reviews

While I found all of the "common myths" presented in this book to be relevant and true to life, I wouldn't recommend for parents of infants and toddlers to read this book quite yet. The book is well written and comfortably structured, but definitely more for parents of older children. The authors offer great tips on overcoming new and sometimes unacceptable behaviors that we find children developing within today's society, but some of their techniques are a little outdated and not very empathetic. So, if you are the type of parent who says things like, "This is my house, my rules," then this book is totally for you (and there are plenty of parents out there using these successful ideas), but if you are a parent who considers your child's circumstances or feelings first, even at a young age ( i.e. attachment parents and plenty of others with alternative family socialization philosophies), this book may not sit well with you. Personally, I tend to fall right in the middle of these two groups. I definitely gleaned some important tips from this book, like taking myself out of punishments and inserting their choices and actions, as well as the idea of "grounding" your older child without telling them how long in order to maintain the true impact of this consequence. The pieces I can't truly get behind (like ownership of the house and the things in it is the parents' alone) I'm sure other parents will find extremely helpful, because no matter what the solutions are, they are always presented in a clear and thoughtful manner.
This is a great resource for any and all parents of children of any ages! I worked with children for 15 years and agree with the teachings of the Finkbeiner's. I have already implemented a lot of their teachings into my parenting style! Although I had to be reminded of a few like the myth "No Means Yes"... recently I have been guilty of the "FINE" go ahead answer... completely under-minding myself in the process (my child is not even 2)! As parents we are shaping the way our children will act as adults and I think that most parents will agree that we all want a happy, productive "humane" adult, not a selfish, unhappy inhumane adult for a child. I think this book is a must read for parents and educators!! This would be a great gift for new parents or new teachers, or even the seasoned parent or teacher. We definitely recommend this book to others!!

"How To Break 10 Common Childhood Myths," was developed by a mother-son teaching duo, Diane and Chad Finkbeiner. Diane has over 40 years of classroom experience (how impressive is that) ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade and has seen just about everything kids are capable of.

Chad has been a formal educator since 2006. Prior to his career change, he had been an extreme sports instructor (very cool) and a counselor for nearly a decade.

Through their combined teaching experiences the Finkbeiner's identified a critical need children need help in becoming independent and responsible.
Their ultimate goal is to offer parental guidance that will help children become productive members of our society.

I wish this book would have been written 30 years ago. It is full of plain common sense which really seems to be lacking today.

One of my very favorite parts of the book was "chivalry, couth, manners ; it doesn't matter what you call it; the concept is one of the most important skills that a person can possess in his lifetime. With this skill and little else a person can make a life for him or herself. What makes manners so great is they are an internal mechanism that needs no prompting or recognition in order to be used; however, the impact that they can make can change the course of a life."

There is also a chapter on entitlement, a huge pet peeve of mine. I enjoyed this book and like I said before what a testament that it was written by a mother-son-duo. Diane must have done a few things right. I would recommend this book to every teacher and every parent.
great book!If you even follow half of the suggestions in this book you will have a much better relationship with your child.Don,t bo one of those parents who give their child everything and respect nothing in return read this book!
This book is a must read for all who are parents or who have been parents. It is also a must read for teachers. The Myths make so much sense and will help to stem the tide of out-of-control children. Children need to know boundaries and have guidelines to grow into happy, productive adults. I highly recommend this book, as a mom, grandma, and educator!
This book should be a handbook for parents and teachers alike. It encourages parents to be a parent first and then you become your child's friend as an adult. It stresses the "why and how" of breaking these myths helps to create a better, stronger, disciplined, more independent child. This is the book I will now give to my friends for their baby showers as it is not a "how to" book, but a reinforcement of "you can" book for common sense child raising.
BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about connecting and making an impact on children in your life, then you will enjoy reading this book. It is an easy read. The only problem with it is that it only addresses 10 Common Childhood Myths. Sequel in the works? Each chapter addresses one of the 10 Common Childhood Myths. You could read it in one sitting on a rainy day...or skip around, take your time and read a different chapter each time you pick it up. Give a copy to your grown children. Their children will thank you someday!
I got the opportunity to meet the author & I could really put a face with the words. Awesome read. I’d recommend it to anyone.
